Promethazine hydrochloride is a phenothiazine used to treat or prevent nausea and vomiting caused by anesthesia or surgery, certain types of allergic reactions, pain caused by surgery or childbirth, and to sedate patients before surgery or medical procedures. Promethazine injection is usually given when a person cannot take the medication orally (by mouth). Promethazine hydrochloride is available in generic form. Promethazine hydrochloride suppositories (Brand Names: Phenadoz, Promethegan) is a phenothiazine that works by changing the actions of chemicals in your brain, and also acts as an antihistamine, used to treat allergy symptoms such as itching, runny nose, sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, hives, and itchy skin rashes. Promethazine hydrochloride suppositories is also used to prevent motion sickness, treat nausea and vomiting or pain after surgery, and as a sedative or sleep aid. Promethazine hydrochloride suppositories are available in generic form. Common side effects of promethazine hydrochloride suppositories include dizziness, drowsiness, sleepiness, restlessness, blurred vision, dry mouth, stuffy nose, ringing in the ears, weight gain, swelling in hands or feet, impotence, trouble having an orgasm, or constipation.

The dose of promethazine depends on the condition being treated. Typical doses range from 12.5 mg to 25 mg, and may be taken once daily or several times per day, as prescribed. Promethazine may interact with cold or allergy medicine, sedatives, narcotics, sleeping pills, muscle relaxers, medicine for seizures, depression, lithium, atropine, belladonna, benztropine, dimenhydrinate, methscopolamine, scopolamine, blood pressure medications, blood thinners, bronchodilators, bladder or urinary medications, MAO inhibitors, medicines to treat Parkinson's disease, restless leg syndrome, or pituitary gland tumor, medicines to treat stomach ulcer or irritable bowel syndrome. Many other medicines can interact with promethazine. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements you use. During pregnancy, promethazine should be used only if prescribed. It is unknown if this drug passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
