Vinpocetine is a derivative of Vincamine, which is extracted from the Periwinkle plant ( Vinca Minor, Vinca Pervinca ). Research suggests that Vinpocetine helps to maintain healthy blood circulation in the brain and supports certain neurotransmitters in the memory process. Vinpocetine supports and protects brain blood vessel health and aids mental function.

       (1) Vinpocetine is a cerebrovascular expansion drug and has a relatively stronger function than Vincamine. It can selectively increase cerebral blood flow, enhance and improve brain oxygen supply, promote metabolism, enhance the capacity of deformation for red blood cells, reduce blood viscosity, inhibit platelet aggregation, improve tissue metabolism.

       (2) Vinpocetine is mainly used in the treatment of cerebral infarction sequela, cerebral hemorrhage sequelae, cerebral arteriosclerosis, etc. It can also used in the treatment of retinal vascular sclerosis and blood vessel spasm, the elderly deafness, and dizziness.

       (3) Vinpocetine is a half synthetic Vincamine derivative, and has the similar effect with Vincamine. It has a stronger expansion function for cerebrovascular selectively.

Recommend Dosage

Take Vinpocetine with meals to enhance absorption.
The standard low dose is 5mg of Vinpocetine at each of these three meals, with 20mg per meal seen as a high dose. This dose range is suitable for the purposes of neuroprotection, enhancing cerebral blood flow, and reducing the rate of cognitive decline.

Side Effects

IV administration of Vinpocetine can cause serious adverse effects, such as death from sudden falls in blood pressure and heart rate (R, R2). However, this is not an issue with oral Vinpocetine at the standard dosages.
There have been reports of skin allergy to vincamine (R).
There was also one report of a sudden drop in white blood cell count at 15mg per day (R).

In alternative medicine, vinpocetine is used for a variety of conditions. So far, scientific support for the potential benefits of vinpocetine is lacking.

1) Stroke and Vascular Dementia

According to some alternative medicine practitioners, vinpocetine may help to increase blood circulation in the brain. Some preliminary studies suggest that it may reduce brain impairment and dementia after an ischemic stroke.

2) Alzheimer's Disease

Vinpocetine is being explored as a complementary treatment for people with Alzheimer’s disease. It’s thought to enhance the brain's use of oxygen, protect brain cells against damage, and increase blood flow to the brain possibly by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase.
A critical review of previously published studies found that the evidence as a whole was too weak to rely on, due to limitations in the design of the studies. Further research is needed.

3) Tinnitus

Studies suggest that vinpocetine may help with tinnitus after trauma to the ear.

4) Cognitive Function

Vinpocetine is marketed in North America as a supplement that can boost memory and brain function in healthy people, but there is no real evidence yet that it can help.
